Clinic Requirements
You will find more details in the Clinic Policies and Procedure Manual that you receive during clinic orientation, but here is a summary:
Dress Code
Students are required to wear white lab coats during clinic shifts or at any time they are behind the bulk herbal pharmacy. See Appendix 3 for a listing of places to purchase a lab coat. Students are expected to be clean and to dress professionally during the shift. Jeans and inappropriate tops are not allowed. Also, skirts must be knee length or no more than two inches above the knee.
Case Studies
Case studies, a detailed analysis following the progress of one or more patients through the quarter, are required each quarter you are enrolled in a clinic shift. Content and organization of the case studies will be reviewed in Clinical Orientation. Students should also consult with their clinic supervisor for any special instructions or preferences. Begin writing your case studies around the seventh week to give yourself ample time to really research and present a good case. There is nothing worse than rushing the case study during the 11th week when they are due. You must submit your case study to your clinic supervisor before the 11th week. Some supervisors require the case study in the 10th week.
Clinic Notes
Students are also required to maintain their own patient notes for each patient they see. These notes are a valuable study tool, and will prove a good reference for difficult cases in the future. (Remember, in order to maintain confidentiality, only use the patient’s chart number to identify them when recording notes).
Clinic Packets
At the beginning of the quarter, you need to pick up a clinic packet for each clinic course. Bring the packet with you to clinic, as you will need to have the supervisor sign at the end of each 4-hour shift. In the packet, you will also record the patient chart number of each patient seen during the shift, as well as what clinical training you received for that patient. At the end of the quarter each student will individually discuss and evaluate their performance in clinic with their supervisor and review the case study. Ultimately, completed clinic packets must be submitted to the Registrar at the end of the quarter so that your clinical hours will be documented for state licensing requirements. Please make certain that all forms are complete and all required signatures are obtained before submitting the packet to the Registrar.
