Counseling
Career and personal counseling are available to
students by request. The Dean of Students is also available to help
students find affordable outside resources for personal problems
that may arise.
Campus Communication
In order to facilitate effective communication
within our community, ACTCM regularly publishes multiple print and
electronic publications. These publications are sent to alumni,
current students, prospective tudents, staff, faculty and friends of
the College.
e-News is an electronic newsletter produced
quarterly by the Admissions Office and e-mailed to prospective
students. It includes general news of interest to prospective
students including special College events, Open House dates, new
classes, administrative updates and application deadlines.
In-Touch is an electronic newsletter sent to all
ACTCM students via e-mail weekly. In-Touch includes news related to
academic, clinical and administrative issues, job openings, career
opportunities, upcoming lectures, campus announcements, classified
ads and relevant news of interest to currently enrolled students.
e-Bulletin is an electronic newsletter sent to
ACTCM alumni who have supplied their e-mail addresses. Classified
ads, news of the profession, Alumni Association announcements and
notices, and general information of interest to licensed
acupuncturists can be found in this newsletter.
Student Yahoo! Group offers current ACTCM Students
an online forum to discuss current issues, ask questions, share
information, post class- notes, create study groups, download forms,
and more. This group is run by students for students, and is open to
all current ACTCM students.
Campus Forum is a quarterly newsletter published
for the graduates of ACTCM. It carries news from the College, survey
questionnaires and results, College notices and updates, and various
articles of interest to all alumni. In addition to ACTCM alumni, the
Campus Forum is also distributed to current students, faculty,
staff, ACTCMs Board of Directors, patients of the Community Clinic,
and friends of the College.
Admissions Point is a quarterly newsletter
published for prospective students by the Colleges Admissions
Office. It includes profiles of accomplished alumni, recaps of
College events, results of College surveys, and information useful
to prospective students such as Open House dates, tuition & fees,
application deadlines, special class offerings for the public and
more.
Career Planning & Employment Assistance
Employment opportunities are published on the
Colleges Job Bulletin Board, the ACTCM website, and in the Campus
Forum and e-Current. Our large network of faculty and alumni also
serves as an important career resource to graduates who are starting
out in practice. In addition, the following resources help recent
graduates build successful practices.
Bridging the Gap A quarterly lecture series
presented by returning alumni who share real-life work experiences,
successes and challenges with current ACTCM students. The series
helps students to better grasp the realities of opening up an
acupuncture office or joining other practitioners in a common
healthcare enterprise.
Broadening Your Horizons - A quarterly lecture
series introducing students to subjects that complement ones
acupuncture practice and broaden the practitioners knowledge base.
Topics are presents by leading experts in the field and have
included Feng Shui, cooking with herbs, and career opportunities at
Elephant Pharmacy and Wei Laboratories.
Transition to Success A monthly lecture series
introducing third year interns and recent graduates to subjects that
cover the nuts and bolts of operating their own acupuncture
practice. Past topics have included choosing a location, creating a
business plan, insurance billing, networking, bookkeeping, taxes,
and marketing.
Student Mentorship Program A mentorship program
pairing 3rd year students with ACTCM alumni who have an established
practice in the Bay Area. The program enables current students to
spend one quarter working and learning about the details of private
practice set up and management.
Brown Bag Lecture Series A noon-time lecture held
quarterly for students where an ACTCM faculty member discuss his/her
area of specialty and shares pertinent patient case studies.
Community Outreach ACTCM strives to serve the
local community through participation in local health fairs, public
lectures, conferences and special events. Whenever possible, the
college utilizes ACTCM student interns and new alumni as staff for
these events. Participation in these activities provides interns
with experience in public speaking, practice building,
self-promotion, public education, media relations and TCM
applications in a public setting.
Alumni Practitioners Directory A searchable online
directory located on the ACTCM website that allows business
referrals (and networking) for those graduates who practice
throughout the country and around the world. Listing in the
directory is by request.
Computer Facilities
Computer stations equipped with Internet and
Medline access are available for academic and research use in the
Library/Learning Resource Center and the Student Lounge. Wireless
computer access is available in both campus buildings.
Housing Information & Referrals
The diverse neighborhoods of San Francisco offer a
wide range of housing options. While the College does not provide
housing, the Admissions Office and Student Services Department are
available to provide assistance and answer questions regarding
housing. In addition to providing referrals to online housing
resources, the College maintains a bulletin board with information
on available rentals. To help with the costs of relocating, the
Admissions Office awards ten $500 Transitions Scholarships each year
to new students who are relocating to San Francisco.
Health Services
TCM treatment is available to students in the
Community Clinic at a discounted rate. Students also receive
discounts on herbs. Should a student need conventional medical care,
ACTCM has a referral list containing a number of low-cost clinic
options.
Student Government
The Student Council provides a ready forum for
students to give input on a wide range of issues, and to interact
with faculty and administration in ways that help shape the learning
experience. The Student Council is an invaluable resource to the
College, and is often a catalyst for establishing new activities and
finding solutions to issues that may arise.
To ensure that students have a voice in the
governance of the College, one student representative elected by the
student body serves as a full voting member on the Board of
Directors. Student representatives also serve on a number of
committees, including Graduation, Safety and WelfarCommittee,
Library, and Strategic Planning.
Student Store
Created by the ACTCM student body and staffed by
Federal Work Study students, the Student Store is located at Pioneer
Square. It contains snack items, clinical supplies, ACTCM regalia,
and class- notes. The Student Store is open to current students,
staff, prospective students & alumni.
Work Study Opportunities
ACTCM hires students through the federal
work-study program. For information about job opportunities at the
College, contact the Office of the Dean of Students.
Optional Practical Training
The Optional Practical Training Program offers
international students the opportunity to gain valuable work
experience through employment in the field of Traditional Chinese
Medicine. Following completion of their studies at the College,
approved international students may work in the United States for up
to a maximum of 12 months to enhance their knowledge of TCM and gain
additional practical experience.
